Theyve changed sams name to lakota.

Sam Uley (as he is named in the book...) he is the leader of the Quileute Tribe.

His character actually is Sam Uley. Lakota is Chaske Spencers Native American heritage not his character. And he is the leader of the wolfpack (Alpha male) and because of this he is also the leader of the whole Quileute tribe. (Jacob states in one of the books that he is anyway) He was the first of the shape-shifters to become a shape shifter and leads the others through their changes as the become shape-shifters.
